About Gabbeh

Gabbeh is one of the most ancient types of carpets woven in south and south-west of Iran. These territories shelter the noblest and the most talented artistic nomads.

Gabbeh is thick piled nomad's carpet that is woven on horizontal loom. The weaver can carry the loom everywhere he moves and weaves on every occasion he finds.

Gabbeh is woven by natural wool and is dyed by natural colour without any design pattern. The weaver is inspired by nature and his own spirits; therefore almost all the woven Gabbehs are unique. Gabbeh designs are peaceful and resemble simple childish drawings. By careful attention, one can observe different aspects of life, like birth, death, joy and sorrow and the nature in the designs.

All the colour used in Gabbeh are rooted from plants like Madder's root, stem and leave of Opoponax, stem and leaves of dyers' weed, straw and shell of pomegranate, walnut, chestnut etc... That not only each one bears a beautiful colour but also their combination provides a unique and splendid shades as well.
